Red Volcanic Clay

I am a big time research nerd and love finding out new and interesting facts, rituals and myths. As I was doing my research on exotic ingredients I felt the need to share this crazy desire to make Hawaiian Red Salt body scrub. The exotic Alaea salt was used for centuries in Hawaiian blessing rituals. Traditionally, it is said that Hawaiians uses Alaea salt in ceremonies to cleanse, purify and bless tools and canoes, as well, in healing rituals for medicinal purposes. This ancient and natural red salt is from the volcanic clay in the sea. The color comes from the iron oxide (FeO2) in the baked hawaiian clay. I love the deep red color. On my visit to Hawaii a few year back (excellent for honeymooner, I highly recommend it) I visited the Big Island. My husband and I took a tour to an inactive volcano during the day then to the active one later that evening. It is such a surreal experience! I felt like I was in Jarassic park minus the dinousours ofcourse. Then as the sun started to set, the glow of the lava became more transparent and slowly made its way into the ocean. As the lava hit the ocean, large clouds of smoke lifted into the sky. It was so incredibly amazing and serene experience. Its been a while and its funny how you recall memories only when something triggers it. So when I read about the ancient hawaiian red salt, it reminded me of the volcano I visited in Hawaii. Although, I don't think I will ever return to Hawaii again (its seriously expensive), the exotic Hawaiian red salt brings back good memories.
